Signed Darry's and dated 1926, this is a fantastic Art Deco portrait of a lady in Oriental costume, wearing an abundance of jewels and pearls, and smiling shyly.
The portrait is colorized with hand watercolor, while the background is all done with pastel.
The piece is exotic, but also VERY poetic!
and has besides unusual decorative qualities.
The lady's make up is typical Art Deco, and so is the profusion of pearls, a must during the flapper era.
It is unclear if the curl on her cheek means her hair is cut short under her headpiece, she could therefore be an actress playing a role in a movie, and the photographer a professional linked to the French movie studios of the time, as the piece was found in Paris.
But my intuition is that this is an authentic Oriental lady who is hip, a flapper girl at heart who came to Paris to enjoy the good life.
Such a portrait is rare and of course touching.
Its whimsical presence will bring a delightful touch of nostalgia to any decor!
