A magnificent standing crucifix from the Napoleon III era, circa 1870-80.
The crucifix which is fairly large and was very likely made in the Black Forest area, is made of the blackened wood of the time, with delightfully elaborate brass ornaments at the four ends of the cross, plus one behind the Christ's head.
A small plaque with "Inri" is applied upon it.
The cross itself is a silvertone metal, while the Christ is a bronzed cast metal.
The contrast of black, silvertone and brass is just stunning!
The cross also has carved instruments of the passion on each side: the sponge, the spear, the ladder, and some reeds.
The elegant stand is a turned wood in the Napoleon III style.
At the back is a small metal strip saying: "Souvenir of a Mission".
An impressive 19th Century artifact that will bring elegance to any home.
CONDITION: In very good condition with 2 small, (hardly visible) restorations:
The reed on the right hand side and a thin split in the wood at the back of the Christ on the right have been fixed.
MEASUREMENTS: Length: 16 1/4". Width: 7 1/2".
(41.5 cm) by (19 cm)
Will be shipped "Expedited" from Paris (5-7 days) including insurance and signature at delivery.
