From the famous 19th Century French publication "Le Magasin des Demoiselles",
a French print showing adorable children wearing elegant Victorian clothes in vibrant colors.
Fashion prints portraying children are often the most artistic of the era.
They usually show young kids, babies, and adolescents in extravagant outfits and decors, and the watercolor artists seem to have been allowed more creativity than in other prints.
In this piece, the colors are stunning: burgundy, gray, royal blue, bright green, yellow, ocher and purple. Extremely detailed and vibrant, they give a totally hyper-realistic feel to the piece.
The Victorian furniture is also quite sophisticated: a Napoleon III table with leather bound books to the left, a burgundy velvet sofa and armchair in the center. Lightly sketched are a tall mirror, drapes and a French door opening on a garden at the back.
The outfits are of course all velvet, silk and lace!
The faces are beautifully rendered. Ultra delicate, their extreme whiteness adds a kind of dreamlike quality to the piece.
The piece is signed "Laure Noel" on the left, and "G de Montant" on the right, and is circa 1850.
A small treasure of Victorian Art to keep very preciously!
