This French print from the mid 19th Century is an absolute beauty!
Mardi Gras costumes prints are the most artistic fashion prints in the French Victorian era in my opinion.
They usually show children and adolescents in extravagant outfits and decors, and the watercolor artists seem to be allowed more color creativity than in regular prints.
In this piece, the colors are just mind boggling. Extremely detailed and vibrant, they give a totally hyper-realistic feel to the piece.
The decor is also extremely sophisticated in this case. The scene happens in a kind of Covent Gardens glass house, with lush vegetation. The ground is even covered with a carpet.
The outfits are amazing: Turkish, Italian couple, Louis XV courtier and marchioness, Arab horse rider, etc.
The faces are also ultra delicate, and their extreme whiteness adds a kind of dreamlike quality to the piece.
The artwork is from a famous French publication of the time called "Le Magasin des Demoiselles".
it is signed "Dien" on the left, and "Dujardin" on the right, and is dated 1850.
A small treasure of Victorian Art to keep very preciously!
