Antique 19th C Century LISTED French Print Engraving Woman Portrait Signed FABULOUS!

Signed Achille Deveria (1800-1857) a major name in the 19th Century, and an artist listed in the Benezit, etc, this is a small engraving with a young woman's portrait of an extreme finesse.

It is actually impossible to find anything more beautiful in that medium!

I am delighted to say the British Museum owns the piece!

(just enter "Soeur de Didon" and "Deveria" in Google to find a full description)

(The engraving makes a pair with item 1972pnt "Ascanius" and is part of a series of 4.

Both pieces, which were done very early in the Century and in Deveria's career (1820s) right after the French Empire, are small masterpieces in the Neo-Classical style.

They are excerpts from a large painting of the time, an innovative feature in the world of engraving, since the medium was supposed to just reproduce painting, and not make selections.

This is what is called "Maniere de dessin" a technique that mimics drawing, fairly popular at the time.

But in this case, it goes even further than usual, as Deveria has been able to give his portraits the quality of soft white marble.

If you look up close, you will see an interesting pattern of light dots, which replaces shadows with lightness.

The characters' features are incredible delicate, they have beautiful eyes and smiles, and are both the picture of innocence!

Their arms and upper bodies are perfect sculptures.

Here is Dido's sister" listening to Aeneas' story about the Trojans, and dreaming, while Dido, Queen of Carthage, falls in love with Aeneas and his adorable son Ascanius.

Some parts of the artwork are realistic, while others are just a light sketch blending into the page.

This totally ethereal artwork, which was sold in one of the most elegant places, rue Vivienne, in the Palais Royal area, as mentioned below the image, will bring prestige and beauty to any decor.
