From the estate of Robert Peltier, (1913-1996) an original watercolor with gouache for Le Louvre department stores in Paris.
The title of the piece is: "Merles d'Automne" (Autumn Blackbirds)
The piece is circa 1948-1954, and the style definitely inspired by the Surrealists, one will immediately think of Magritte and Dali.
VERY poetic, somewhat mysterious, this superb composition shows a tree with the colors of Fall on the right, a red mask in the center, with a large ostrich feather and an eye inside, and an elegant black glove reaching out to it.
You will notice the tree is a typical Paris tree, as it has this metallic protection to its roots you see everywhere in the city.
The lettering is delightful, whimsical and ornate.
A small treasure of the Post War era, which will bring elegance and refinement to any decor.
Robert Peltier, together with his wife Odette Peltier, were known in the 1940s and 1950s for their fantastic posters. (this is also the time of the famous Gruau)
Most were for large department stores like Galeries lafayette, Le Louvre, etc.
Le Louvre department stores closed in 1974, and have since been replaced by "Le Louvre Des Antiquaires", the prestigious antiques mall across Le Louvre Museum.
The Peltiers' posters were of course all over the place, and both artists literally reigned over the style of their time for nearly 20 years.
