Circa 1790-1800, this is a divine antique French drawing from the Georgian times, representing the most graceful mother carrying a toddler, and holding the hand of an older child.
The piece is quite large for the time, and though there are obvious 18th Century conventions, there is also natural affection going on between the characters.
This is quite perceptible in the toddler's movement towards his mother, but also in the way the mother holds the other child's hand, and in the genuine love we can read on her face.
She is so beautiful!
Wearing an elegant hat, she wears a simple late 18th C dress, and the flat shoes of the time.
Her head is slightly tilted on one side, which, with her light smile and closed lids, makes her look like a Madonna!
As for the older child, who has curly hair and is wearing the kind of infant's toga of the time, he has a typical 18th Century "putti" face.
A fantastic scene, beautifully rendered, that will bring charm and elegance to any home!
