So genuine and poetic!
Signed "A. Caufriez" and dated 1948 at the back, this is the most enchanting naive painting I have seen in a very long time. It comes from Provence in the South of France, and shows a slice of life in the French countryside, right after WWII.
On a rustic wooden table covered with a thick damask tablecloth, is a cosy 1940s blue lamp, what looks like a big earth ware tobacco pot, an open book and a pipe.
All are familiar objects left for a moment by the man living in the house, and one can imagine the nights in the room under the lamp, with little noise outside, except maybe a dog barking in the distance, when the man is reading, and smoking his pipe, probably reflecting about the war just finished, and telling himself how good it is to live in peace!
The painting is an oil and it is done on wood, which adds even more charm to the scene.
A small treasure!
