An extraordinary circa 1900 German Art Nouveau/Jugendstil lithograph by J.J. Vrieslander, showing Pierrot and Columbine crossing a magic garden with a mythical bird in the distance.
The scene is simply amazing, dream-like, with rare characters and facial expressions, a sense of the grotesque, and a lush vegetation in the Seurat "pointillist" manner, except here in black and white.
John Jack Vrieslander (1879-1957) can make ultra-contrasted pieces, with stark black and white areas, but this is a time in the "Jugendstil" era, when artists were obviously looking for "special effects".
In that case, rendering a scene with only a few shades of gray, a sophisticated flattening of nature unique to the era, and which seems to have died with the trend.
For that purpose, Vrieslander has chosen a different technique: "photolithography" which allowed him to reach this breathtaking pointillism, that even George Seurat would have been jealous of!
Pierrot and Columbine is a little masterpiece where everything is absolutely different! from the walk, to the costumes, the trees to the bird.
An enchanting piece, like a stunning silent movie, which transports you to one of the most creative times in Art history!
