Elegantly signed with the initials "BR", this is a sepia or "sanguine" watercolor on thick parchment paper.
The piece is Italian, circa 1780-90, very likely a Grand Tour piece sold to the travelers of the time.
This is Venice seen from the sea, a Classic representation of the city, though part of the famous Dome seems roughly sketched or may have faded.
A palette of simple colors: essentially sepia with a touch of gray and green, against the smooth cream color of the parchment.
This picturesque scene offers a glimpse of daily activity along the shores of Italy, 2 centuries ago, and has enough details and power of evocation to make us dream about this long gone era.
