My last cape from this extraordinary French textiles collection, and not the least!
Circa 1870-80, (Victorian times in England) it has a divine Napoleon III jet beading, with black "passementerie" ribbons, an incredibly rich and elaborate motif, and also a rare black swan border which follows its sumptuous folds.
A museum quality piece, and so steampunk! it can still be worn today with all the mystery and romanticism of an aristocratic cape, with a simple "fix".
We had to remove the quilted silk lining as it was completely shredded, so the lining has to be replaced.
But a cape is a simple, sleeveless garment, and all there is to do is follow the pattern of the thick canvas inside.
The velvet is in good shape, and still pitch black, which is rare. There are 2 small holes, one at the fastener level, some wear of the velvet also in the fastening area on top, otherwise, the swan hiding its borders, it looks really superb.
There is some loss of the jet beads, as always, but this is not very noticeable, as the velvet is still marked where the beads used to be, and it literally fools the eye.
However, if you prefer to reattach some of the beads, a little pouch of jet beads will come with the cape.
It is the end of these antique capes. They are over 130 years now and can still be worn 20 years or so. Then I believe we will only look at them.
Enjoy therefore this extraordinary piece for the years to come!
I advise a padded lining again, but this is not absolutely mandatory. It used to be black, but you can have a contrasted color like red, ivory or purple, (purple works well with the Napoleon III style.)
The inside of the collar must be strengthened with very thick canvas, especially if you like your Victorian collar really high. (the motif at the back is so beautiful!) I also would advise lining the collar inside with simple black velvet.
