Antique 18th C Century RELIGIOUS Large Charcoal Drawing ANGEL & Children Hugging Signed TO DIE FOR!
Absolute innocence, 2 children and a young Angel embracing in the light, against an area of deep darkness.
The piece is large for the time and in particularly good condition. It is signed "M. Bellot" or "M. Bellet" in the lower right corner.
The style of the signature, definitely late 18th C to very early 19th, and of the portraits/hairdos and the youngest child's costume dates the piece circa 1780-1810.
As a matter of fact it is dated next to the signature, though it has considerably faded.
By increasing the contrast one can read what is very likely Fev (February in French) and 98 (for 1798)
This fits perfectly. And places the piece in the heart of the French Revolution.
The drawing is therefore very likely the expression of fear and hope in the midst of this terrifying turmoil. The scene seems to be located in a stone building, possibly a prison.
A superb religious piece with the most endearing characters and the depth of History!
