An antique pair of French Baroque style bronze candlesticks. The highly decorative candlesticks set on a round stepped base with three very distinctive sections. Griffins, rams' heads, and other mythical figures intertwine with acanthus leaves and scrolls. Inscriptions that appear to be in Latin are faintly seen on the stepped base. Art from the Baroque period (17th C) has been described as stylistically complex, yet often contradictory. This pair of candlesticks from a later time frame seems in line with that description.
French, Circa 1870, mark on each candlestick is being researched. I have found traces of information regarding the name impressed on the bottoms that refer to bronze pieces being exhibited around the time frame of 1855 in Paris.
