ON LAYAWAY; A matching pair of French sterling silver coffee/tea or chocolate cups with gold or vermeil wash Circa 1900. The pair are classic in design bearing a cross ribbon and band motifs. The design encircles the cup and saucers and shapes the handles as well. Elegant and restrained in design; they would work with a wide range of china patterns and silver flatware. These larger size chocolate cups are getting more difficult to find and even more difficult to find a matching pair. Just in from Paris and in time for the holidays.
Marked with the Mercury mark for export from France with #1 for .950 silver guarantee. They maker's mark in the diamond shape is GB. There are two symbols; one above and below and both marks are worn. I sustained an eye injury just before leaving Europe, so I will not strain to decipher the symbols. If anyone should recognize the mark; an email would be appreciated.
The four pieces weigh a total of 284 grams. The saucers measure 5 ½" in diameter and the cups are 2 ¾" without handles in diameter; 4" across with handles and the are 2 ¼" tall.
The overall condition of the set is good with some dings that are normal for the age and use of silver. These could be removed easily if desired. One cup has more gilt loss and each cup has a few small dings on the rims and near the lower edges. One saucer has a flat ding.
