Antique silk embroidery of a young couple in a garden. Their outfits are beautifully stitched and parts of the hands and face appear to be painted on top of stiches. Elaborate raised stitches bring the tree and other foliage in the garden to life. On the far right side are several birds above people working in the distance. The birds also appear to be painted on. I have not removed the piece from the frame; however when view through a loupe over the glass small specks of paint can be seen outside the "v" shape of the birds.
The piece is done in many shades of green, gold, and brown with a light rose for her outfit and blue for his. The stitches are in very good condition and overall the piece is very good. There is a small wrinkle just below the lower tree leaves on the right side. The gilt wood frame may or may not be original to the embroidery work. The condition is poor with two cracks and a break in the beaded edging.
Acquired in England, could be English or French, Circa 1820
