1900 Mappin & Webb 3-Piece Strawberry Server
Only diners of the late nineteenth century would have had such a large and impressive serving dish just for strawberries. We know its purpose because of the detailed strawberries suspended from the handle-- three on one side and two on the other. Strawberries have always been important to English society (think Wimbledon), and this antique silverplated piece would have occupied an important place on the table. It was made by the highly esteemed firm of Mappin and Webb and is marked on the bottom. It dates to around 1900. Note that it has two removable dishes, one for cream (the handled piece) and the other for sugar. Both of these are original. Although designed for strawberries, clearly this could be used for other purposes. It is also quite large: 17 inches long by 7.5 inches across, with the height being 9 inches. The last picture shows the server in a table setting. I doubt that one would ever find another serving piece like this.
