This is a truly wonderful antique powder jar. It is high quality cut glass with a stunning golden guilloche enamel lid. In addition the powder puff inside has a matching golden ball for picking up the puff. To top it off the lid is sterling silver and very heavy. It bears the mark of the maker of this lovely piece, Foster and Bailey of Providence, Rhode Island. Note that the mark is F&B inside a flag shaped symbol. This company, which later became Foster and Bros, existed as Foster and Bailey from 1878 until 1898. The company and its successor were highly respected makers of jewelry and sterling silver in Providence. The powder jar is 8 inches in diameter and 4 inches tall. The lid is 7 inches in diameter. The ball on the puff clearly matches the lid showing it is original. All pieces, glass, lid, and puff are in outstanding condition. There is some loss of the gilt on the underside of the lid, shown in the last picture. The puff looks as if it has never been used. This is an exceptionally large and impressive piece for a vanity item. The lid weighs 12 ounces on a postal scale; the silver value alone is considerable.
