c. 1880 Asparagus Server and Tongs - Sheffield Silverplate
This is quite an unusual antique asparagus tray. I've never seen another like it. The removable insert on which the asparagus is placed actually spells out the word "asparagus." It is silverplate, of course, and has several marks on the bottom as the English pieces always do. I have shown them in the last picture though they may be hard to read. The mark on the far left in Gothic capitals is JR, which is the mark of John Round of Sheffield. The piece dates to about 1880. Included with the tray is a fine pair of asparagus tongs so this is a three-piece set. The top part can be removed from the solid bottom tray for cleaning. The dimensions of the piece are 11 inches by 8 inches. The height is 1.5 inches or 5 inches if you go to the top of the circular decoration. The tongs are 8 inches long and 2 inches wide. The set is in beautiful condition. This is indeed a handsome and useful table set. The last picture shows the server in a buffet setting in order to show the scale of the piece.
