From renowned master smith Odiot, antique French sterling silver sugar tongs. Superb rocailles pattern realized with particularly refined chasing, accented with a delicate tendril of laurel leafs and graceful lamberkins. A touch of gold coats the inside of the tongs, at the tips and the top. The pattern is double struck, giving us twice the pleasure of this exquisite pattern. Charles-Nicolai Odiot excelled in the rocailles style; while it cannot be stated definitively that these tongs were made by Charles-Nicolai, we can be certain that he influenced the style. (Sadly, French sterling does not have date marks. The sterling guarantee on this piece dates from 1838, when indeed Charles-Nicolai was still working. However, inasmuch as the Odiot mark has remained constant for over 100 years, and said sterling guarantee is extant.....well, we just cannot be sure.)The tongs are in fine condition, without a monogram.
Dimensions: 4.25" long, 1" wide at the top, and 1.25" across at the tips. Weight is 40 grams. Marks: .950 sterling guarantee, the Minerve 1st titre (which is suggestively quite rubbed) and the Maker's punch for Odiot.
