Antique French Empire Sterling Vermeil Ice Cream Service 14 PC

Gorgeous .950 sterling silver ice cream service service comprised of two serving pieces and twelve spoons. The 'business' end of each piece coated with 18k-22k gold, and engraved intricately with heraldic symbols; cutting back to the silver for a great mixed metal effect. I am very keen on mixed metal. The handles are decorated with palmettos, flowers, stiff leafs and strapping. the engraved bowls a confection of the torch of life, wings and exquisite laurel leaf wreathes symbolizing swift victory; and more. The torch on either side embellished with Renaissance style floral foliate accents. Condition is very good to excellent. There is some wear to the gold coating on the large serving knife and 2 of the small spoons. The second photo gives you a close up of the center of the knife; the gold loss is noticeable, but not so bad. The set has no monograms, which always increases the value of these marvelous antique French flatware sets. And it comes in the original fitted box. A wonderful set, and in time for Christmas!

Dimensions: serving knife is 10.5" long, 1.5" at the widest and weighs 105 grams. serving spoons: 9.5" long, 2.75" at the widest and weighs 80 grams. spoons: 5.25" long, 1.25" at the widest and weight: 25 grams each. Combined weight is 486 grams .950 sterling silver. (French sterling has more parts silver than American and British sterling, where the standard is .925 parts silver.) Marks: each piece has the Minerve 1st titre; as noted, the .950 sterling guarantee since 1838. And each bears the maker's punch for Lapparra & Gabriel, active 1902-1923 at 157 rue du Temple, Paris. A final note: neither the fabulous little sterling tray or the exquisite vermeil sterling tazza in the photos come with the service. They are for sale however ;)
