The first of several hand painted French ivory miniatures recently acquired from a couple who spent their active years in Paris and London, at the finest showrooms, building an admirable collection of French antiques. This box beautifully crafted of dore bronze, highly decorative, with applied ribbons, floral swags, floral baskets and bouquets. And the centerpiece of course is the hand painted, signed portrait miniature. I am not comfortable taking these portraits apart. So you will have to decide via the photos about the quality of the painting. This one looks to me like gouache on ivory based upon both the opaque quality of the painting, as well as the appearance of the additive (minuscule white specks.) The painting is quite lovely, as is the young woman represented. The details on the gown, the lace, beautifully wrought. The box is lined in velvet and I believe this is a later addition to the box. The painting is signed: Felizce or Felizce is what it appears to read. But I am absolutely the worst at figuring out written inscriptions. Give me spoken language any day.
Dimensions: the box is 5.5" long, 4.5"" wide and 1 5/8" deep. Condition: very good to excellent.
