English Regency Brass Inlaid Mahogany Travel Desk Fitted with a Beaded Edge Rosewood Veneer Interior !!! Dated 1850 Pencil Inscription.
Similar to the one Thomas Jefferson owned and used while traveling as an American Ambassador in Europe, and within the United States before becoming President.
Presented as an Engagement Gift with a dated Pencil Inscription on the bottom of the Secret Drawer in the Hidden Compartment ! Inscription reads as follows : Engaged April 3d,(Tuesday)1850 M*Canning & Anna E. Johnston. See the last photo.
Identified Ward type Lock Maker was "E.Turner" (1825-1850) ; found on London,England Travel Desks which is known by his Trade mark of the Script "P" Die Stamped inside an Oval which is seen on the upper Latch or Keeper Plate. The style of the overly fancy Script documented "P" would translate to an actual "T" for Turner. Proof Ref.; Samples are found with both "E.Turner" & "P" together.
Profusely Inlaid with Unusual Inlaid Round Brass circles with interior 8 pointed Stars inlaid with Ebony. Matching Brass Plaque & Key Escutcheon Plates. Inlaid Brass Rectangles Patterns, Corner Straps, with Flush Mounted & Countersunk side Handles. Case side wall construction is 7/8 inches Thick. The interior slant top boards are solid mahogany with bread board end construction. Deluxe Side drawer is dovetailed front & back and allows for access to optional amenities such as game pieces for Men, or sewing needs for Women while traveling. (bottom of drawer reveals a pencil drawn 6 by 6 square possible game board set up, with a grid pattern of holes for possible nails to hold spools of thread)
Outside Case Dimensions are 19 7/8 inches from left to right, and 11 inches in Width, and 7 7/8 inches in Height.
Case fully opened exposing the Slant Top Writing Surface Overall measures 22 3/8 inches in length, and 19 7/8 inches Wide.
Weighs : 20 Pounds.
Condition : Very Fine condition, with minor professional restorations. The Velvet was replaced with "Velveteen Cloth" on the inset writing surfaces, and the Green Felt was replaced on the bottom of the case. The brass spring loaded drawer locking pin was re-manufactured. Only Missing the square glass Inkwells at this time.
