Authentic 1796 Engraved Print of "Napoleon Bonaparte on the Arcole Bridge Nov.17,1796" by Master Engraver Joseph (Giuseppe) Longhi !!!
Master Engraver Giuseppe or Joseph Longhi : Born Milan,Italy 1766 Died 1831.
This fabulous Propaganda Poster is Considered to be Napoleon's Launch as a War Hero before becoming a Politician, then Finally a Dictator.
First the original painting was done by Master Painter Baron "Antoine-Jean Gros" (1771-1835). Then the Master Engraver Joseph (Giuseppe) Longhi had to travel to the Museum in France to make his Sketches before making a Full size Master Engraved Printing Plate. Title also contains the French Date from the New Post Revolutionary War French Calendar .
Longhi's Prints are Very Rare since his Master works were done before he became the second Director at the "Brera Institute of Art" School of Engraving in Milan. Searching Longhi's works Worldwide I've been able to find only about 12 existing examples, whereas 4 were in The British Museum in London,England, and a couple in the Louvre Museum in Paris,France. Last record of a "Napoleon Bonaparte" print sold at auction for 1500 Pounds Sterling.
Longhi's Teacher and Predecessor was Vincenzo Vangelisti :(Born in Florence 1740-1798) was also an Italian engraver. Emperor Leopold II of Austria invited him in 1766 to Milan, where he became a professor in the Brera Academy, and in 1790 first Director of the School of Engraving instituted by that prince. He committed suicide, after having defaced his remaining copper plates.
