This is a French Limoges Haviland & Co factory decorated hard paste porcelain game bird set. The date is the 19th century, circa 1887 to 1889.
The set consists of one large platter and six plates. The platter is about 16 ¾" long, about 10 ½" wide and about 1 ½" high. The plates are about 9" in diameter.
The platter and plates each show a landscape scene containing game birds. The scenes are decorated at the factory to give the appearance of being hand painted, but in reality the scenes are created by using transfers, and with highly trained factory workers adding the shaded colors to the background, and strokes of enamel over the top of the completed scenes. Collectors of Haviland porcelain prefer the dishes to be factory decorated, whereas the collectors of antique Limoges may prefer the porcelain to be entirely hand painted without the use of transfers.
The scene on the platter is quite beautiful, perhaps because it is a larger landscape. There are long billed birds and mallard ducks on a pond, with lots of water plants and greenery. In the sky are birds flying off into the distance.
The plates have three different landscapes, meaning there are two plates for each landscape. Haviland made the game birds in a series, and the landscapes show four different scenes from one series, the three from the six plates and the one from the platter.
There isn't any observable wear to the gold trim. The plates and platter do not show any utensil scratches on the faces at all. There are no chips, cracks or crazing. There are a few marks in the glaze from the firing process. One plate has a smoothed area on the back that appears to be factory created. One plate has a few flea nicks on the foot rest, the part of the underside of the plate that rests on the table. The gold trim on the platter has a few dark lines that are not cracks or age lines, just lines in the gold due to the aging process.
The green underglaze mark on the platter is H&Co over L. The green underglaze mark on the plates is H&Co over Depose. The brown decorating mark on the platter and plates is Haviland & Co Limoges inside the double circle.
