ENGLISH, SILVER & COWRIE SHELL SNUFF BOX circa 1884
Exceptional and rare, this superb Cowrie Shell Snuff Box fashioned with a black mussel shell set in Silver, dates to the third quarter of the 18th century. Displaying a wonderful patina of jet black, creamy white and a vivid shade of violet that follows along the shell to it's rounded end it fits comfortably in the palm of your hand and measures 3 1/4" length x 1 1/2" at it widest .
These highly sought after Cowrie Shell Snuff Boxes symbolized prosperity , wealth and in some cultures were a sign of fertility. Highly collectable, for the serious collectors of unique snuff boxes or caskets this is a fine selection indeed .....from the well known Beresford, Silversmiths of London, England, circa 1884
