French, Sevres C.1860 Cobalt Blue with Gilt Pot a Lait
This is a wonderful Sevres (Old Paris) covered pitcher, or jug with a matching lid in a deep cobalt blue lustre glaze from France. My research shows that it was known as "pot a lait" or milk pitcher and was used at the dinner table for serving liquids.
It has been exquisitely hand - decorated with multiple layers of a deep glaze that in dim light will appear to be almost black because the glaze is a spectacular deep rich cobalt blue.
Possessing the most exquisite of details with gilt bands top and bottom and a marvelously gilded handle, finial and spout, it has been further enhanced with a heavy application of raised impasto gilding and jeweling of superb gilded flourishes of scrolls, ribbons, beads, vines, leaves and delicately strewn roses...to the pot and matching lid...it is Divine!
This is a show stopping beauty, the perfection of this piece clearly demonstrates why collectors hold French porcelains in such high regard.
This exquisite hand - decorated piece is in in excellent condition, with no breaks, chips or repairs...just a very slight rub on the handle and a few kiln flaws on the interior which I mention only for accuracy. A stunning piece that will display beautifully in a place of your choice.
