This unique French girl is Paris Bebe by Jumeau. She has perfect bisque and her original body retains the original finish. She is fully dressed in a fine costume including original unders, excellent antique lace-up boots, and a fanciful hat. There is sometimes confusion between the Paris Bebe of Danel and the Paris Bebe of Jumeau, so I have added an historical note below regarding the lawsuit between Jumeau and Danel concerning Paris Bebe. Although they have completely different heads, they are both listed in Jan Foulke's Blue Book under Danel. Layaway is always an option. Please contact me to discuss terms. Here are the details:
Head: Her bisque head is perfect with no cracks, chips, or hairlines. She has large bulbous blue paperweight eyes and a closed mouth. The Paris Bebe of Jumeau has almost character-like features - her longer, more slender nose is a little turned down on the end, and her mouth and chin have fine extra modeling details. The modeling of her features is excellent and her painting is superb. If you are looking for a French bebe with a unique face, you have found her! She has a lovely antique brown curly mohair wig. Her head is marked with a red stamp: Paris Bebe / Tete Deposee / 10. She is also incised 10 down in the neck socket. (Danel's Paris Bebe has incised markings and no red stamp.) Examination: There is a short red surface mark near the rim which occurred in firing, and some insignificant speckles. There are no signs of wear, she is just as she came from the factory.
Body: Her original body is fully jointed. The body has been blacklighted and there are no signs of repair or repainting. The all original finish has darkened with age and shows normal wear. It is correctly marked on the rear, Paris Bebe / Deposee and an Eiffel Tower. Please see the historical note about correct bodies for Jumeau's Paris Bebe.
Clothes: She is fully dressed and I really love her costume. She wears a gorgeous dress designed with row after row of gauzy lace-trimmed finely pleated ruffles. There is age wear to the stiff gauzy fabric but it is minor and hidden by the tiny pleats. It appears to be antique, but on close examination, I believe it is made of fine antique materials. Underneath, she wears an antique three-piece matched underwear set that I believe is original to her. The set consists of a camisole and bloomers that button together and a nice half-slip with widely flounced hem. She has a fabulous unique hat and a crocheted purse, both of unknown age. She wears antique knit stockings and excellent antique lace-up boots marked 10 with the impressed figure of a lady.
The lawsuit in regard to Paris Bebe:
Danel was sales manager in the Jumeau factory. Guepratte was in charge of the production of eyes and shoes for Jumeau. These two men left their employment with Jumeau, and along with a couple of other partners, started a doll production company known as Danel and Cie. Danel and Cie produced dolls that appeared identical to Jumeau's Tete model, and marketed them as Paris Bebe. Jumeau filed suit against Danel and won on appeal. Danel production ceased and Jumeau was awarded the Danel trademarks of Paris Bebe and Bebe Francais.
Identifying Paris Bebe:
Danel's model has a typical Tete Jumeau face and INCISED markings. Jumeau created a new face for use with his newly awarded Paris Bebe trademark. The Jumeau face has sharper, almost character-like features, and the head is marked with a RED STAMP. The bodies made by Danel were marked Paris Bebe with an Eiffel tower. These bodies were confiscated by Jumeau and used by him on his newly trademarked Paris Bebe. Once the supply of Danel bodies was depleted, Jumeau reverted to his own typical Tete-style body. According to Theimer's Jumeau Book and Theriault's Body Book, either body is correct for Jumeau's Paris Bebe.
