Aesthetic Brown Transferware Plate w/Peasant Gardner
What a beautiful age old stoneware cabinet plate this is. The peaceful brown transfer color is soft and warm with young peasant girl leaning on fence rail, resting I am sure from her toiling in the garden. She holds a rake in one hand and is resting her chin on her other hand. The image is framed to one side of the plate and surrounded by daisies and other foliage. A branch of blossoms edges the other side of the plate. Plate is 8 ½ inches in diameter and is in typical vintage condition with 3 blemishes; they actually appear to have been there maybe since manufacturing; they are glazed over, one is opened like it may have been bubbled. These are old blemishes, discolored into plate color and barely noticeable. For me, they add character and date the plate. Please check photo. The plate is taupe or stone tone color with all over mottling giving it almost a sponged appearance. The plate is unmarked, but I believe this is Burgess, Leigh & Hill pottered in Staffordshire, England probably in late 1800's early 1900's. The flowers are reminiscent of Grindley English pottery which also dates to this period. There is no back mark so I can not say for certain.
