Offering for sale a most wonderful and rare reliquary. This one would have been made by a Nun or Sister of a Holy Order (or rarely a Monk or Priest) for their personal use. It has a red satin background and sides, lining in red inside and out. In the center is a lovely miniature white bisque or French pipe clay or plaster figurine of the Virgin Mary and Infant Jesus on a pedastal of white taffeta and surrounded by ornate gold paperolles, and framed with a heart shaped paperolle. There are 19 labels, at the top is St Therese. (she was the reason we originally bought this one). I see also St Celestine, Helene, Edme, etc. Reading these labels in reliquaries is an art in itself, and often a new owner will never know for sure who all the Saints are in their reliquary. There are several marked St Reliques, most often of Martyrs. This is a very fancy reliquary, whoever made it was quite skilled at the art. It is covered with hand cut glass, which could be removed if necessary for cleaning, etc. Notice how the maker used a cardboard oval box or similar container to start her reliquary as evidenced by the photo of the back. This one originated in France. It measures 4 & 7/8" tall by 3 & 7/8" wide and is in overall good condition. When we acquired this the prior owner had put it in a wood frame and luckily we were able to extricate it and restore it to its original form. Reliquaries should never be disturbed or altered, it would be considered a sacrilege.; and should be opened only for necessary repair. This is one of the loveliest ones we have been lucky enough to keep, with the beautiful miniature statue in the center. Please note the background of this reliquary is a uniform color of red, my camera hates reds and has made it look like it is pink in some places, it is not.
