Offering for sale an old paper reliquary for Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque., one single folded paper reliquary as shown in the first photo. This is a folded paper which contains a 2nd or 3rd class relic of a Blessed or Saint. This one contains a small piece of cloth that has touched the bones or other relics of this Saint. On the front is handwritten in French "Etoffe sur laquelle out repose les ossements de la vble Soeur Marguerite Marie Alacoque". Loosely translated with my high school French, this is a cloth touched to bones of the venerable Sister Margaret Mary Alacoque. This means this reliquary was prepared by the Sisters of the monastery before the Saint became a Saint, hence the title "venerable". This would date this to before 1920, possibly as early as 1860's. She was beatified in 1864 and canonized in 1920 May 13 by then Pope Benedict XV. The history of this Saint is very interesting, she was healed of a crippling disorder during a vision of the blessed Virgin Mary, during which she gave her life to God. After receiving a vision of Christ she joined the Order of the Visitation in 1671. In 1675 she received a visitation from Jesus when He gave her 12 promises to her and those who practice devotion to His Sacred Heart, this became a widespread devotion and continues today among devout Catholics and other Christians. She has become one of the most popular of the female Catholic Saints; and her life has become an inspiration for many to convert. We acquired these from another antiques dealer that specializes in Religious items, most of which were acquired from churches and monasteries in France and other European countries. We have had a fascination with the paper reliquaries, and bought the entire box, some of which is shown in the last photos for educational purposes. After giving many of these to our close friends, the others are available for sale. These unframed relics can be framed, sometimes they are enclosed in a small pouch of leather or fabric to be carried by the faithful, some people prefer to tuck these in their Bible or prayer book as a marker, it can also be placed in a locket.. It is important that these be kept at least safe, clean and in a manner that is reverent. This group came from a monastery of Sisters in France that at one time made most of the reliquaries in France, the folded paper reliquaries would be stored in this box until they were ready to be mounted or otherwise prepared to be send to Cardinals, Bishops and Priests to be given to the faithful. Many times these would be sent out before a blessed became a Saint in hopes that a miracle would be reported to help with the beatification. Unfortunately relics and reliquary are no longer given out (or at least rarely), and have become very difficult to acquire and very expensive to purchase, which is the only way to get them anymore. We are showing the box for educational purposes, the item for sale is represented in the first photo, the single folded paper reliquary, and we have a quantity of these available. Your reliquary will be the same, loosely defined , as the photo, as these are handwritten no two are alike, and the contents of each may be larger or smaller. We have not opened any of these, as we never open reliquaries out of respect. You can see the fabric in the photo with the back-lighting. Your reliquary will ship in a secure box with insurance.
