Antique Bronze Oriental Page Turner Lucky Toads Frogs
We love page turners, especially the ones with the unusual designs. This one is old, fine bronze from we think China, with designs all over the turning blade with openwork, very nice touch. But it is the handle that is the masterpiece, a very unusual gentleman in kimono with two frogs or toads on his back and a tiny one under his feet. The face on the "person" actually resembles a monkey, although we do not see a tail. We just don't know the significance of this piece, although we do know the toads are considered lucky especially concerning finances and business luck. the metalwork on this piece is just fabulous, fine details and very high relief on the handle. This beauty measures 12 & 7/8" tall and it is in good condition. The handle has the same design on both sides, also a wonderful touch, with the center toad having an aged bronze patina, with all three shiny on the other side. The turning blade has an ornate design on one side, the other side mostly plain with a few small engraved designs mostly worn down from age. We have not cleaned or polished this antique piece at all. This is a two piece design, in other words the handle was made separately from the blade and then attached.
