Offering for sale a pair of fabulous and old statues or busts, of an Indian (India ) Hindu man and woman. These feature ornate carving and woodwork. The man is wearing the traditional head wrap, the lady a very ornate necklace or collar and matching head dress, probably a style used in a celebration or religious festival. The detail even in the back, with her hair in a bun and clip with what we would call a pony tail. The wood looks like a mahogany, could be a teak, and most definitely would be a wood indigenous to India or Pakistan. Both bust statues has a wood base that is applied onto the lower edge of the carving, giving it a very nice finish, something you virtually never see on new statues of this type. These bases are nailed on with with the nails sunk in, very nice work, the man's base is flush with the statue, the woman's extends out making a very elaborate effect. They both have a very tribal look in their faces, and given the head gear I am guessing they represent some tribe from the southern part of India. The detail is wonderful, notice the ears of the man, the minute detail work in the lady's head garment. They are of good weight for the size, and smooth to the touch. The man is approximately 11 & 3/4" tall, and the lady is 11" tall. Both have a label on the bottom "Made in Kashmir India", indicating their origin and also their age, as the political climate in Kashmir shifted quite a while back. These came from a fine estate, an older couple that traveled a lot. The wood has a very rich patina, and they look wonderful on display. Sold only as a pair.
