Beautiful old French altar crucifix in fine bronze with fabulous details. It features first a very fine unusual Corpus of Christ, not one nail missing on one foot. This may be a version of the Risen Christ. On all three cross ends are Gospels emblems of an eagle, winged cow and winged lion, each in a lovely detailed medallion with lovely European Art Nouveau end decorations; and the base of the cross the medallion of the winged Angel holding the Book. The elaborate base of this altar cross has claw feet and upside down dragons, topped off with a beast head, the back one gone from age. This is a very heavy crucifix and with a beautiful age patina. We have not cleaned or polished this at all. On the back of the cross are the screws that hold the Corpus, and the four medallion backs are actually concave; one could possibly insert four small round reliquary there if desired with a little creativity and some glue. This magnificent crucifix measures 24" tall and is 12" wide at the cross and in overall very good condition.
