Lovely 9 volume set, The Works of Charles Reade, a edition in nine volumes illustrated with one hundred and twelve full page wood engravings, published in New York by Peter Fenelon Collier, no stated date, circa 1900. These are old hardbacks, green binding with gold gilt titles and art on the front in the nouveau style still bright, the gold gilt title on the spine more faded. Bindings are secure overall, and pages clean and free from markings. Page outer edges have nice green marbling. The illustrations are very very nice, making this a good set not only for reading but the value of the art. Vol I contains It Is Never Too Late To Mend, Peg Woffington, & Christie Johnstone, 528 pages, spine little wobbly with seperation after ffep but still intact, small fraying on top of spine, corners some bumping. Vol II contains Hard Cash & Love Me Little,Love Me Long; 599 pages, very good condition, minor corner bumping, firm binding. Vol III contains The Cloister And The Hearth or Maid,Wife, and Widow a matter of fact romance, 412 pages, secure binding, mild corner bumping. Vol IV contains Foul Play, Clouds and Sunshine, Art A Dramatic Tale, Propria Quae Maribus, The Box Tunnel, Jack of All Trades, & An Old Bachelor's Adventure; 415 pages, overall good with seperation before contents page but intact binding, corners with some bumping and fraying, upper spine outer has a one inch tear on fabric only. Vol V contains Put Yourself In His Place, The Wandering Heir, & The Picture; 416 pages, very good condition with only a hint of seperation, corner bumping, Vol VI contains White Lies & A Perilous Secret; 414 pages,good condition; Vol VII contains A Woman Hater & Griffith Gaunt or Jealousy; 438 pages, good condition.; Vol VIII contains A Terrible Temptation & A Simpleton, 398 pages, good condition, Vol VIIII contains Good Stories (8 stories ), Good Stories of Man And Other Animals (11 stories) and Readiana, 400 pages, corner fraying mild, binding strong. Overall this set is in good condition for the age, with expected wear from light use; books are heavy and sturdy, each approximately 10 & 1/2" tall, nice paper with decent size print for reading.
