One of the most unusual inkwells we ever had, a mighty lion! This is a gold gilt over metal, possibly bronze, proud but friendly lion figure with dark brown to black fine glass inlaid eyes; his head opens up to reveal the inkwell with white porcelain or pottery liner. There are two prongs that attach the top, and they do come out, but they appear to be original, we think they might have originally been longer; and this could be solved by gluing the prongs into the holes if one desired. The lion is screw mounted on a black painted wood base, which may not be original to the piece. Although mounted with old attachments, we see some metal that appears broken or bent on the back underside of the figure, making us think this was originally mounted on another piece. The stance of the lion is just wonderful, and he stands 5 & 1/8" tall for the figure plus another inch height for the wood base. We think he is in overall very good condition and truly unusual.
