Royal Doulton Bursley Dinner Plate Pattern D1319 Rabbits
Lovely dinner plate by Royal Doulton, Doulton Bursley, measuring 10" across and in good condition, circa 1902-1922 established by the markings on the back, we think in the first half of this period. The deep elaborate border is a lovely pale green with pale yellow flowers over white china with the center hunting motif. On the back is the Royal Doulton underglaze mark in blue; dating this to circa 1902 - 1922, we think this piece near the earlier of this period; plus the matching platter (listed separately) has the incised mark for Doulton Bursley. The time period is further established with the numbers D1319 which identifies the time and the earthenware category. We find no artist signature. We have not been able to find a pattern name for this at all. The workmanship of the painting in the center and the style and motif are very similar to the hunting series in the style of Morland, which was done during this same time period. This also may be a design that was commissioned: this came to us through another dealer who purchased it from a woman who inherited it from her mother. Her mom had done some type of work or favor for the wife of a Governor of Tennessee, and a platter and group of matching plates were given to her in exchange. We have been unable to find any other items with this same pattern number, but did notice the similarity in style and time period as before mentioned. The borders are transfer but may have some hand painting under the glaze. We believe the center to be at least transfer outlines with hand painting and may be totally hand painted, as each one is slightly different in the center. This plate could of course be used on the dining table, and when not in use properly presented for display on an easel or plate stand. We have the matching platter in our shop with one rabbit or hare and a chasing hunting dog plus two groups of matching plates. What we know for sure is marks are authentic, time period well established. This plate is in good condition with a small chip on the underside of the edge, a little age darkening on the front with mild crazing, some dark places on the back.
