Antique English Box With Brass
Lovely antique box from England, fine English lacquer with a faux burl finish on the exterior, black on the interior. Nice nailed on brass or gold metal trim on the top, a center piece matching a corner (one corner decoration gone) and two side decorations we think resemble crosses, with more on the front. What fascinated us is that in addition to the lid which lifts normally, originally with a lock and key on front, (key gone of course), one side also lifts down with a post and hole closure, all original. We just don't know why! Lovely shaped feet and graceful scalloped edges on the top, just a beautiful little box. It measures 9 & 1/4" by 5 & 1/2" and is 3 & 1/8" tall. It is in overall good structural condition, no significant damage or issues and lovely patina from age.
