Offering for sale a lovely and rare large fluted centerpiece bowl of papier mache. It features a fluted oval shape with gently scalloped edges; and notice the background color, a fabulous faux tortoise shell color combination of black and bronze, truly lovely. There is gold painting on the rim; and in the center lovely dahlias or other flowers of red, soft yellow and creamy white with very subtle leaves and stems. This piece is unsigned. The fluted shape was originated by Jennens & Bettridge of England, in fact they created most of the finest decorative techniques in papier mache art. We do not know for sure if this is their piece as other companies probably copied their work., but not many mastered the lovely gentle fluted shapes with the scallops and the rich background colors. We have priced this as an unsigned piece. It measures 10 & 1/8" by 13 & 5/8" long; and is 1 & 7/8" tall. It is in very good condition with no cracks, minor age crazing or crackling only, We have not cleaned this bowl for the photos, we will leave that to the new owner. This bowl comes to us from England, created mid to late 1800's. When viewing these photos, the shape of the fluted sides and the brilliance of the coppery shade in the background are creating a very unusual optical illusion, the bowl looks like you are looking at the underside, but it is indeed the inside.
