This is a wonderful old tole painted tin spice box or container with five small individual spice tins. The five spice tins are copper colored. They have a stencil design on top and the names of the spices are stenciled onto the tops. The tins are stenciled allspice, nutmeg, ginger, mace and cloves. The outer container is black decorated with a red band around the top. It has a bail handle and latch. The top is hinged. There is a cylinder inside the center of the container that holds a nutmeg/spice grinder. It also contains two old tin biscuit and canapé cutters. They were probably placed in the set at a later date, but they fit perfectly.
The spice box measures approximately 7 ¾" in diameter and 3 ¾" high. The spice tins measure approximately 2 ½" in diameter and 2 ¼" high. The grater measures approximately 1" in diameter and 2 ¾" high.
The overall condition is good for its age and the fact it was a utilitarian kitchen item. The spice container and the tins do have some paint loss consistent with age and use. The box, tins and grater have some oxidation.
