The focus of this necklace is a stunning slice of amethyst crystal. The crystal pendant has been cut from a druzy geode, and the crystals are a lovely lavender. The top edge of the pendant is deep green, and clear sparkling striations lead to the amethyst crystals. The pendant is rectangular in shape and measures 1 inch by 1 ¾ inches and is held to the necklace by 2 silver plate bails with an etched design.
I created the necklace to echo the colors of the pendant. Trios of amethyst beads in light lavender and faceted deep violet frame the focal followed by a pattern of ruby in zoisite tube beads separated by the faceted amethyst beads. The zoisite beads show bits of red ruby inclusions which add contrast to their forest green. Silver daisy heishis are interspersed throughout, and trios of light lavender and zoisite lead to the lovely swan hook toggle which completes the design.
The matching earrings hang from green hypoallergenic niobium earwires and team the zoisite with the light lavender. The earrings measure 1 ½ inches from the piercing. The necklace measures 24 inches in length.
Interestingly, the ancient Greeks believed that amethyst would protect the wearer against becoming drunk. Other cultures believed amethyst to be a grounding stone, balancing high energy and reducing chaos. Ruby in zoisite is relatively new to the jewelry world, having been first discovered in 1954 in Tanzania, the only place it is known to exist. The contrast between the earthy green colors of the zoisite and the ruby crystal inclusions results in a lovely and unique stone. This combination of elements is simply fabulous!
Please Note: The necklaces I create are one of a kind designs. The gemstones I used in this necklace are natural, and both the amethyst and the aventurine are hand-cut. As such there may be anomalies in shape, size, and color. Some amethyst does lose color if exposed to sunlight for a lengthy period, so keep the necklace tucked away when not in use. Niobium is an element with the atomic number 41 and the symbol Nb. The reason it is hypoallergenic is that it is physiologically inert which is why it is safely used in sensitive medical devices like pacemakers.
