This hand-painted porcelain demitasse cup and saucer with its Art Deco design is simply delightful!
The design is gold and green and features slightly abstract leaves which evoke a sense of movement. The central design encircles both the cup and the saucer and consists of gold leaves interspersed with splashes of green leaves highlighted by tiny bits of red and blue. The green leaf motif is also in the center of the saucer. The centers of both cup saucer are circled with wispy lines and whorls highlighted with tiny dots. The cup and saucer are edged with a gold design which continues the sense of movement. The cup and saucer rims are lightly scalloped, and the cup sits on a small pedestal edged with gold. The handle is highlighted with gold lines and a splash of gold down the center.
This porcelain demitasse cup and saucer are backstamped "New Chelsea Staffs" with the anchor above and "Made in England" below. The date of this cup can be narrowed to a period between 1929 and the early 1940's. Until 1929, the production of this company was almost entirely focused on traditional patterns such as blue band or white and gold wares. After 1929, however, new patterns were developed such as this delightful hand-painted demitasse set.
The demitasse cup measures 2 ¼ inches high and 2 ½ inches in diameter. The saucer measures 4 5/8 inches in diameter. This cup and saucer is in beautiful condition with no chips, cracks, fleabites, or crazing, and there dies not appear to be any gold loss. This is a wonderful example of an Art Deco design on a lovely, lovely little cup and saucer!
