This is a unique and wonderful vintage moriage porcelain cup and saucer embellished with brightly colored roosters. The background both cup and saucer is a very dark smoky grey around the as well as the pedestal of the cup. The dark color fades into a lighter grey in the center shot through with smoke-like wisps and wispy spots of blue and rose red. Two roosters facing each other appear on both the cup and saucer in wonderfully detailed slipwork.
The roosters are yellow and brown with red combs and are highlighted in off-white. One has brown wings, and the other has turquoise-blue colored wings. Slipwork wisps in turquoise, black, and gold embellish the opposite side of both cup and saucer. A slipwork scallop embellishes the rim of both the cup and the saucer, and both are edged in gold. The handle is also trimmed in gold.
The cup measures 2 ½ inches high and 3 5/8 inches in diameter, and the saucer is 5 5/8 inches in diameter. Both cup and saucer are in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, fleabites, or crazing. There is a bit of gold loss on the handle, and there are a couple of very light marks of the sort that occur when moving or adjusting a display piece. The original metallic stickers are on both pieces. They are shield-shaped, blue in color, and say "Sterling China" with "Japan" on the point of the shield.
This is a wonderfully unique and very collectible moriage cup and saucer, worthy to be on the shelf of any collector of dragonware, moriage, or rooster motif items.
