Victorian Portrait Brooch - The Neapolitan Fisher Boy

A stunning Victorian painted porcelain portrait brooch, circa 1890. The central porcelain plaque is 1" x 1 1/4" with a hand painted portrait after the original "Neapolitan Fisher Boy" painted by Gustav Karl Richter in about 1867. This was a popular Victorian 'romantic image' seen on a number of pieces of porcelain, including plates and vases. The pictures were copied and painted by hand. This one is exceptionally well done! A number of Richter's portraits of beautiful women and engaging children (including his famous portrait of Queen Louise of Prussia) appeared on Victorian porcelain and jewelry.

The wide gold setting is engraved with designs and measures 2 1/4" x 1 1/2". The reverse has a locking clasp. The brooch is 18K gold plated. It is unmarked, but has been examined by a jeweler. There is no wear to the gold plating. There is slight wear to the surface of the porcelain - see photos.

A similar brooch may be seen in the book, "Victorian Jewelry" by Jeanne Bell p 143.
