Rare 1950s Dorset Rex LEATHER and Lucite Box Purse Handbag
This bag is made of high-quality leather strips in a natural caramel color. The Lucite lid, base and handle are a deep reddish brown/rust color that has a nice translucent quality. The bottom has 4 goldtone metal ball feet.
The interior is fully lined in a neutral tan color fabric with one pleated sidewall pocket with mirror in it (has a small crack at edge and may have been added to the purse by owner). There's also a side slot to hold a lipstick.
The inside is in good condition with no notable wear or tear. The outside shows normal age wear/tarnish to metal (we haven't polished anything). There's slight discoloration at INSIDE edge of the clasp but it works fine and you don't see it. Under close scrutiny, the Lucite shows a few minor scuffs in keeping with its mid-century age.
This rectangular shaped box purse is amply sized to carry what you need, day or night. It measures 9 inches across by 4 inches wide. It's 3 1/2 inches high to lid with another few inches for the handle. It's a go-anywhere bag, always in style with its very unique retro look. Overall, this handbag is in very good condition. No cracks, stains or odors.
Variations on this handbag can be seen in the Dorset Rex chapters of the book 'Plastic Handbags: Sculpture to Wear' by Kate E. Dooner and Judith Miller's Handbags.
