c1930 Black Americana FIRESTONE Man Cutting Rubber Tree Figurine

This old advertising figurine was made for FIRESTONE Tire & Rubber Company, circa 1930. Made of hand-painted chalkware, the black man is extracting sap from a rubber tree. He stands 5 1/2 inches tall and is 3 inches across the base. This was used as a tire store display.

The figurine is marked FIRESTONE on the front of the base and LIBERIA S.A. on the back. At one point, the company had a rubber plantation in Liberia that covered more than 1 million acres.

The Firestone Tire and Rubber Company was founded in 1900 to supply pneumatic tires for wagons, buggies, and other forms of wheeled transportation common in the era. Firestone saw the huge potential for marketing tires for automobiles and became a pioneer in the mass production of tires. It helped that Harvey Firestone was friends with Henry Ford who, in 1906, chose Firestone to make tires for the Model T.

The figurine has minimal nicks to paint but no chips, cracks or repairs. It's in overall excellent condition.

In 1988, Firestone was sold to the Japanese Bridgestone Corporation.
