Vintage Russian Hand-Painted Lacquer Miniature Box - Judaica Scholar - Signed

This beautiful Russian lacquered box is a miniature painting of a Rabbi studying the Talmud. It's signed by the very talented portrait artist at bottom right. (Unfortunately, we can't quite make out the name.) The painting is highly realistic and detailed. The colors are perfectly chosen to create the proper lighting and mood. A thin gold line frames the painting. Two parallel gold lines wrap around the box's sides.

The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the box and red lacquer completes the interior of the work. The lid is hinged from the left of the portrait, and the box rests on a flat bottom. The box measures 3 1/2 by 5 inches by 1 inch thick.

Box is in excellent condition, fresh from a Palm Beach estate collection.
