The Best & Oldest Alligator Handbag We've Ever Had (in 45 Years)
We've never met an alligator handbag we didn't like. But this is one we LOVE! It's truly the best one we've ever had. You can tell immediately that this is an early one (the only one like it we found was dated 1908!) The quality of the skin is beautiful as this was expertly finished to last.
The handbag has its original sheen and amazing natural texture. The strap is woven and sturdy. The inside of the bag is lined in soft brown suede.
There's actually a double interior...one that's under the head and claw flap and the other which you open by pushing the brass lock to the right and pulling the front tab (see photo). That interior is also lined in suede and has a little side pocket which contains the original matching alligator change purse.
The handbag itself measures 10 1/4 inches across by 7 inches high. If you include the gator snout, it's 8 1/2 inches high.
There's some normal age tarnish to the brass which could be polished though we prefer to leave things as found. Minimal wear to the suede inside and leather exterior. Overall, this handbag is in excellent condition. There are no tears, stains, dried out areas or other notable flaws. This gator is as nice as they come, complete with glass eyes.
