Japanese Hand-Carved IVORY Cat w/ Ball Signed Netsuke
This fantastic Japanese carved ivory figurine captures 'the look' that says...'It's MY ball...don't even think of taking it away'.
The carving is exceptional. It's carved out of one very fine piece of pre-ban ivory. The cross-hatch pattern flows throughout and the artist gave the cat a subtle fur-like texture. It's evident by the realistic carving and use of the ivory grain, that the artist had a special 'feel' for this natural material and its characteristics. The highly detailed carving has carved inlaid eyes made of horn. The overall patina is rich and smooth.
The cat measures 3 inches long by 1 1/4 inches high. It weighs 36 grams.
The bottom has both the large and smaller holes for attachment. These ivory carvings were often worn as lucky amulets under clothing. The artist's signature is bold and clear. We probably have the signature sideways...apologies to our Japanese friends.
Condition is excellent. Carvings of this quality are hard to find. But not as hard as getting a ball away from a cat.
