18" 1890s Creche Neapolitan Older Woman Rare Glass Eyes

Dignified, appealing and unusual – mere adjectives just don’t express enough when gazing upon this gentle soul. She is unmarked and in excellent all-original condition. Her terra cotta head has molded painted wavy grey hair up in a bun, with partially exposed ears. There is a gentle look upon her face with its blushed nose, open-closed mouth with a slight smile and upper teeth, and her black glass eyes. The lower limbs are terra cotta: arms have large expressive hands with most of the fingers separated; feet have molded painted heavy shoes. A wire armature inside holds her upright, and is extensively wrapped in hemp fibers to flesh out her body. Dressed as a shop woman from Naples, her long skirt is a royal purple silk with bands of hand-embroidery and long calico apron with upper lower sections of woven shaded lavender plaid. The bodice is white knit under a soft red silky twill jacket trimmed with gold metal braid. Underneath are rough linen pantaloons. Excellent workmanship makes this large figure unforgettable. Very clean from a non smoking home.
