Here for your consideration is a Mason's Ironstone China "Nell Gwyn" cup and saucer, set of 2, c. early 1920's. They have an octagonal shape, hand painted over an eggshell glaze with a vibrant colorful floral garland design, C- shaped laurel leaf handle and trimmed with a teal/turquoise color along the handle and rim of both the cup and saucer. They are marked: MASON'S, royal crown logo [note the style of lettering and shape of the crown], PATENT IRONSTONE CHINA within a draped banner, "NELL GWYN", ENGLAND [under glaze, black ink back stamp]. The saucers have incised marks under glaze of '0B', 'J 10 T' on one and '0B', '1YJA' (?) on the other, along with the pattern number C2680 [written in black paint over glaze]. All pieces are in excellent condition with minimal loss of paint with no cracks, chips, or repairs. There is heavy visible crazing on one saucer. SEE PHOTOS FOR DETAILS.
NOTE: The use of 'ENGLAND' was added to marks after 1891 to comply with the American McKinley Tariff Act, 'Registered Numbers' began to be used after 1884 and the use of 'Name of Patterns' began after 1810. The cup and saucer offered here is marked with a G.L.Ashworth & Sons, c. 1862 pattern numbering system "C"2000 series pattern number of "C2680", used c. 1920-1929 [chart found on Janice Paull's website].
